Manual Feed utilizes the treadle mechanism from a 100-year-old Singer sewing machine to drive a miniature lathe for turning fruits and vegetables. As part of the Stanford Design Loft’s annual ‘Personal Statements’ art show, the piece celebrates my passion for food and working with my hands, whether in the kitchen or the machine shop.
A leather belt connects the lathe assembly to the original pedal-powered drive wheel below. The system is geared such that the user can achieve spindle speeds of several hundred RPMâplenty fast for turning a sweet potato with woodcarving tools. Composed primarily of brass and walnut, each piece is machined and finished by hand.
