Shape Memory Umbrella
The shape memory umbrella reimagines a familiar household device using technology that lies just beyond the current realm of possibility. With a frame of nickel titanium— a shape memory alloy—the umbrella ‘remembers’ its correct position even after being distorted. By manipulating the composition of the material and the temperature applied, it may eventually be possible to move between multiple preset configurations.
In place of a traditional canopy, the umbrella employs an electromagnetic field that repels the polar water molecules as they approach it. No more drips and puddles when it’s time to come inside!
