An exploration in design language, this pair of pens borrows the styling elements of two of my favorite brands and artists—Nixon and Greg “Craola” Simkins—and applies them to the familiar writing instrument.
The Craola pen takes its shape from the artist’s trademark tentacle. Its glossy, black and white form makes Simkins’ work instantly recognizable and, along with the pen’s beak-like nib, embodies his style of infusing cartoonish forms with sinister undertones. The Nixon pen, on the other hand, reflects the clean geometry and unconventional mechanisms of the company’s watches. Its hexagonal barrel and wood inlays suggest a desire to be a pencil, a nod to the subtle quirkiness found in many Nixon designs.
